Ledaig 1998 Douglas Laing & 19 Marsala Finish Reviews

Hi everyone,

You must know by now that I’m a huge Ledaig fanboy.

Tobermory is going through a refurb at the moment and apparently, once that is finished, the Tobermory and Ledaig brands will be going through a bit of a premiumisation…
Let’s hope to God, it’s not in a bad way. I’m not holding out hope though.

The indies tend to be a tad better and less expensive than the OB’s anyway, so I’ll probably be sticking with those for my purchases.

These two were from Whisky in Leiden. The Douglas Laing I’ve been eyeing up buying for ages, so almost had a heart attack when I saw it at the show.
The Marsala cask I’ve been very curious about too.

Ledaig 1998 Douglas Laing Sherry 48.4%
Colour: Amber
Body: Medium
Nose: Textbook meatiness from the master of meat. Complex with a fleshy fruit thing, powdered pepper granules, chilli chocolate.
Taste: Soft arrival, lovely spices, tyre rubber, fleshy fruit, black pepper, and lots of chilli dark chocolate spicy bitterness.
Finish: Medium length. Oily, spicy and mouth watering.
This was better with water: A more floral and elegant nose, juicy and fuller taste and a longer finish. This was great but not as good as the 19 marsala.
80/100

Ledaig 19 Marsala Finish 51%
Colour: Amber
Body: Medium/Full
Nose: Cleaner than the 1998DL, still meaty though, peppery charred meat, floral oak and burnt heather. Really elegant actually, a very interesting counterpoint to the intense younger IB’s.
Taste: Lovely balance of sweet and spicy, builds very well with juicy and some meaty unami, spicy and floral notes too. Again, elegant.
Finish: Medium length. Smoke comes through then more floral notes, flower petals.
The Ledaig we need from the distillery to compete with all the great IB's, the price is high though. Still, great great whisky. Tempting.
83/100
