Bowmore 12 (1980's), 1990 Wemyss & 1992 Red Wine [Review #800]

Hi everyone,

What better way to go into 800 Scotch reviews than Bowmore, the supremely hate-able distillery that made some of the best whiskies ever created, then some of the worst and now some of the most mediocre.
The 80’s was a hard time for Bowmore, made worse by the denial of an obvious problem. But thankfully they managed to make some better whiskies into the 90’s.
The problem was dubbed ‘French Whore Perfume’ or FWP by one creative whisky blogger and the name has stuck.
Today I’ve got three from the 80’s and early 90’s.

Bowmore 12 (1980's) 40%
Colour: Gold
Body: Full
Nose: Woah! Very odd, metallic and floral, soapy in the extreme, complex though in its own way, slightly meaty, parma violets (of course), watery perfume, some floral soft smoke.
Taste: Weird, strange mouthfeel I've never had from a whisky before, floral and super FWP, parma violets, bath bombs, lavender and violet, metallic mouthfeel and thin, very thin. No Smoke.
Finish: Medium/Long length. Some floral smoke and spice, weird. Ugh.
Unscoreable! Haha No, it’s just very very odd. Very much the ugly side of FWP.
61/100

Bowmore 1990 ‘Earth, Wind, Fire!’ 46%
Colour: Gold
Body: Medium
Nose: Tropical, salty with ozone and v Bowmore, quite complexly floral w/ some violet, daffodil and sunflower, darker oakiness but mostly quite bright, lemon peel, aged ham maybe?
Taste: Soft arrival, lemon cake, salty with smoked fish and then amazing chocolate, malt and peat, dark earthiness with some heather, growing oils with more peat.
Finish: Medium length. Very soft finish, mostly about the mouthfeel and oils.
Bottled late 2018 from Wemyss. A little out of balance early/middle of the palate. I’ve tried a few of these older Bowmore’s from Wemyss now and none have lived up to the incredible 1987 ‘Sweet, Peat Posy.’ They just haven’t been as peaty it seems, and therefore haven’t aged as powerfully or as complex.
80/100

Bowmore 1992 Red Wine Matured 53.5%
Colour: Amber
Body: Full
Nose: Meaty, muscular and bold. Red wine put out fire, coals and ash and soot, quite powerful, blood orange, cigar, leather, very dark chocolate and espresso. A few florals hidden underneath. Chocolate mousse. Really great meld of red wine and spirit. Dirty in a good way too.
Taste: Soft and sweet, blood orange, chocolate, peaty malt, coals and ash, black pepper, orange liqueur, pretty peaty and intense for Bowmore actually, brown sugar, molasses.
Finish: Short/Medium length. A bust of fruit, then burnt heather and malt and chocolate.
Bottled at 16yo. Good to remind ourselves that they make some of the best whisky in the world occasionally! This whisky not only surprised me but really amazed. I’m not normally a big fan of red wine and peat (or red wine finishes on whisky at all really) because balance is hard to reach, but this one makes it seem easy.

Ledaig 12 Present Future & 19 PX Finish Reviews

Hi everyone,

Sorry for the lack of activity on my front, just being lazy I’m afraid. But today we are back with two awesome Ledaig’s. Yes, more Ledaig. I’ve got loads and I’m always trying more!
Both of these have used Sherry in the maturation, which we know works well with Ledaig but we have an indie and official. Let’s see how they compare…

Ledaig 12 Present Future The Whisky Exchange Show 58.4%
Colour: Amber
Body: Full
Nose: WAHH! That's what we love! Big dirty Ledaig. Red fruit and red meat, black pepper, beautifully balanced nose, complex and sexy. Fresh cherry and black cherry lifting the whole.
Taste: Full but with a soft arrival, red fruit, big spice, dirty, malt and black pepper, ash and soot, complex, cherry coming in. Oily for days.
Finish: Medium/Long length. Black pepper, red meat, really oily. Like REALLY! AMAZING.
Nose is the star here but its all great of course. For TWE Show's 10th anniversary. I think this is Signatory stock that whisky exchange have bought. I bought a bottle of this, which doesn’t happen often these days. Also… HOLOGRAM LABEL!
86/100

Ledaig 19 PX Finish 55.7%
Colour: Amber
Body: Full
Nose: Meaty, creamy, cherry, pomegranate, fragrant orange peel. Raw steak and green peppercorns. Not as complex as the full sherry matured stuff.
Taste: Dry start, mineral, pomegranate, Mezcal into the finish. Not nearly as sweet as I had expected.
Finish: Long length. More spices here, ginger, black pepper.
On the expensive side for Ledaig at £150. A little dry for my tastes although specs looked like exactly the whisky I love.

Balblair 12 & 15 Reviews

Hi everyone,

I am starting to believe that Inver House changed more than the packaging when they did their revamp of the Old Pulteney and Balblair ranges recently.
I’ve really liked the Balblair range I had tried so far, and I was a fan of the vintages, although I can understand why they would swap to age statements. Still, the stuff still has age statements and is still at 46%, so how bad could it be?
Well…

Balblair 12 46%
Colour: Light Gold
Body: Medium
Nose: Cheesy? What? Some spice, some oak, a little of that hessian character, dry nose, not hugely complex either. Very little of what I enjoyed about Balblair in the past…
Taste: More Balblair here thankfully, soft arrival, spicy and oaky actually, ginger, shortbread. Tastes older than 12 years with the amount of oak but, again, doesn’t have the complexity.
Finish: Medium/Long length. Kinda harsh, oak and spice, rubber?
Well below par from Balblair.
59/100

Balblair 15 46%
Colour: Light Amber
Body: Medium
Nose: Much better. Sherry, light raisin, honey, orange + peel, milky coffee, stewed cherries and a very light earthiness. Sweet nose.
Taste: Dry arrival with a little harsh spice up front then creamy with vanilla, dry oak then taking over, then more juicy, develops well. Raisin, chocolate, some hessian and bright cherry at the end.
Finish: Medium length. more cherry, some orange, fruity and juicy here.
I think this is a Sherry finish rather than fully matured. Much better than the 12, though I think I would still be disappointed if I was buying a bottle.

Knockando 12 & Fettercairn 12 Reviews

Hi everyone,

I’ve got two 12’s today from distilleries Knockando and Fettercairn. Both random places that you’ve likely never heard of.
Knockando is a big seller in France (where its hella cheap), while Fettercairn have recently redone their entire range with a new bottle design and stuff. The Fior was alright but Fetter doesn’t have that great a reputation.

Knockando 12 40%
Colour: E150a
Body: Light/medium
Nose: Classically Speyside, fresh with red apple, clean malt, some oak and generic ginger.
Taste: A little harsh but sweet start with some brown sugar, then softer with red apple, apple pie, generic oak and ginger, becoming more harsh again towards the finish. Quickly distilled methinks.
Finish: Short/Med. alright mouthfeel here but pretty average in terms of flavour with more of the generic oak and ginger.
Read the above as BORING. There is nothing special about this at all.
63/100

Fettercairn 12 40%
Colour: E150a
Body: Medium
Nose: Funky and more than a bit odd. Fruit but with cheese and apple, creamy nose.
Taste: Oak to start then green apple before funky cream going on. Odd.
Finish: Medium length. Some oak and spice here, more average.
New packaging 2018. Nose reminded me of a Tobermory with the funky stuff, but not in a good way. The taste follows on from that, while the finish is pretty boring.
64/100

Inchmoan 12 & Croftengea 2007 The Single Cask Reviews

Loch Lomond
Inchmurrin
Inchfad
Inchmoan
Croftengea
Craiglodge
Old Rhosdhu

These are the brands of malt whisky that Loch Lomond distillery produce from various stills and various peating levels. Is it confusing? Yes. Is it interesting? Yes, I think so anyway.
As far as I am aware, both of these are heavily peated whiskies coming from the distillery but using the different still systems to give slightly different flavours. The Inchmoan uses the stills with rectifying plates in and the Croftengea doesn’t? Perhaps? But there’s isn’t really much info online, hopefully we can clear this all up when I’m at the distillery in November. In the meantime what are these two like?

Inchmoan 12 46%
Colour: Gold
Body: Full
Nose: Medicinal and Laphroaig-like at first nosing, sweeter underneath, spiced orange, some vanilla, salted fish.
Taste: Medicinal hit, TCP and medicine cupboards, its a god damn Pharmacy in here!, some chewy orange (classic Lomond), late spice.
Finish: Long length. Think Laphroaig again, medicinal and mineral and thick and intense.
Looking for a Laphroaig replacement? Loch Lomond has you covered. Seriously powerful and medicinal whisky, that tasted blind, I would probably guess Laphroaig.
75/100

Croftengea 2007 The Single Cask 60.2%
Colour: Straw
Body: Full
Nose: Lovely slightly meaty Ledaiggian smoke. a little cheese, farmhouse cider.
Water: Lighter and less funky.
Taste: Soft, very balanced, lemon, peat, more maritime as it develops, sea salt, cheap pepper.
Water: More lemon, more spice as it develops. Unbalances.
Finish: Medium length. Maritime, salt and pepper, lemon.
11yo, nice and reminds me of Ledaig but doesn't quite pull off the same greatness. There’s that funk but it lacks in complexity compared to the Inchmoan.

Singleton of Dufftown 12yo, Tailfire & Malt Master's Selection Reviews

Hi everyone,

I only realised the other day, when looking through the sidebar on my blog, that I haven’t reviewed a whisky from Dufftown distillery yet, which is crazy because my first bottle of single malt whisky I bought was Singleton of Dufftown 12.
Its never been a particularly impressive or well regarded distillery though and the attempts of Diageo to make something of it as a single malt seem to have fallen a little flat. They tried age statements, then they tried no age statements with cool names and now they have a new one that just sounds the same as everything else on the market. I’ve tried three from these different eras.

Singleton of Dufftown 12 40%
Colour: E150a
Body: Light
Nose: Fruity Speyside, lots of stewed apple, sweet pear, pastry, hot fruit crumble, apple pie, apple juice, some nut, some malty chocolate, cream.
Taste: Fruit and nut. Soft and mellow. Nutty, malty arrival, fruity development- Soft apple, pear, lots of vanilla, some honey, little bit of spice.
Finish: Short length. Fades gently with... well nothing really.
My 1st single malt whisky! Mental that I hadn’t reviewed this before. Quite thin and average at times, especially into the finish.
64/100

Singleton of Dufftown Tailfire 40%
Colour: E150a
Body: Light/Medium
Nose: Fresh, strawberry, sweet fudge, sweet toffee, raspberry and meringue, pavlova, clotted cream.
Taste: Soft, 'smooth,' sweet toffee, fudge, biscuit, vanilla then creamy with strawberry vodka?!, some young spirity notes into the finish.
Finish: Short/Medium length. Strawberry vodka, spirity.
A bit different with those obvious fruity strawberry notes but it ends up being artificial and thin again. Almost tastes more like a grain whisky actually.
62/100

Singleton of Dufftown Malt Master’s Selection 40%
Colour: E150a
Body: Light/Medium
Nose: Malty, pear, marzipan and red apple. A little praline shell chocolate, but fairly classic Speyside. Vanilla and pastry after a bit.
Taste: Soft, vanilla, creamy, red apple, some ginger, some oak, apple juice, then malt and some generic chocolate.
Finish: Short length. Lacking power then more malty with chocolate again.
Another young one I think. Shows off more of a natural style though.
66/100
