For today, I’ve got an obscure Glen Spey. Maybe one of the most unknown Speyside distilleries. It’s Diageo owned and creating their whisky almost exclusively for blends like J&B.
However, the Flora & Fauna series is still going (I think), some having been discontinued, some continue to continue. Think this one is still available.
The only previous F&F bottling that’s really impressed me was Benrinnes 15 (Link) with its lovely chocolate mousse flavours.
Glen Spey 12 Flora & Fauna 43%
Colour: Gold
Body: Light/Medium
Nose: Clean and malty. Crisp fruit, green apple, pear, malt, grass, caramel, honey, some chocolate. Chalky and green after a bit.
Taste: Very gentle. Malty, grassy, crisp green apple and pear, then some caramel developing with a little chocolate and some bitter oak. More green and watery after a bit.
Finish: Medium length. Bitter tannic hit then soft chocolate.
Some unpleasant notes here, maybe they’re focussed a bit more on quantity rather than quality. You can see why we don't see much of this.
