Amrut Madeira & Kadhambam Reviews

Hi everyone,

Amrut Indian single malt whisky is one that people do hype a little more than say Paul John. The Spectrum and Greedy Angels releases have gotten some big attention from people in the know, while certain single casks go for crazy money at auction. All good signs that the whisky is good stuff.
Trying the Fusion, I learnt that that was for good reason. Its good whisky. And I had the chance to try two others; one new, one not so new but both good.

Amrut Madeira 50%
Colour: Dark Gold
Body: Full
Nose: Quite complex herbal and spicy. A little raisin and prune from the Madeira, orange and cut grass, cinnamon, coriander and cardamom, curry paste and spicy lime chutney. Develops well with shortbread and vanilla.
Taste: Dry arrival, plenty of very dry oak and spices, big cardamom and ginger, some orange coming in, big whisky, really mouth-filling, really dry.
Finish: Medium/Long length. Dry and juicy somehow, orange and oak, some of the cardamom left.
Very dry but very good. Nose is like you've gone for a curry! Quite expensive though.
76/100

Amrut Kadhambam 50%
Colour: Amber
Body: Full
Nose: That same spicy lime chutney, complex with a really cool medicinal note, sage, almost earthy, black liquorice, faint orange peel, some raisin.
Taste: Dry arrival and stays dry with lots of oak, then big notes of juicy orange, raisin, liquorice and curried lime, coriander and sage, moments of medicinal-ness.
Finish: Medium length. More medicinal here, orange, ginger and earthy sage.
Batch 5, a combination of Rum, Sherry and Brandy barrels (as stated three times in a row on the box…). A really great whisky from Amrut, very impressed with this.
83/100

Ardmore 2002 Chieftain's Madeira Finish Review (PLUS a blind review video)

Hi everyone,

If you’re a daveswhiskyreviews.com follower, you might have noticed that I’ve started a YouTube channel (Link here) tasting various whiskies in various states of blindness.
This next one was the blindest yet. My mate Tom sent me three samples from bottles he got for Christmas. This was the first and boy did he pick a tough one.
Despite knowing that Ardmore was his favourite, I didn’t think his FiancĂ©e would get a different Ardmore to the one I told her to get for him… (sigh)
Anyway, you can watch me get it embarrassingly wrong HERE.

Ardmore 2002 Chieftain's Madeira Finish 46%
Colour: Gold
Body: Medium
Nose: After tasting it blind for youtube I now get rubber first, burnt rubber, pastry, lemon citrus but there's a definite off note to this getting in the way, herbal, I said Gin in the blind review but actually it’s more like Jenever, juniper, craft rye like spice to it too, turmeric.
Taste: Sweet arrival, lemon citrus, some pastry there too, very fresh then some of that Madeira funk, no rubber, not really much smoke but a little ash maybe, then you get some of that rubber from the nose and spice, some ginger.
Finish: Medium/Long length. A little more smoky here with that strange Madeira funk, little clue as to where the peat has gone though.
Bottled at 15 years old. Very little smoke to this actually, as I got with the blind review. A lot of weird/off notes here for me that really detract from the experience. Which is a shame because Ardmore is great, the spirit just hasn't melded well with the cask. Coming back to it after getting it very wrong on the blind review, I don't feel so bad as its very atypical of the Ardmore style.

Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban & Madeira (Old Style) Reviews

Hi everyone,

I realised a few days ago that I have a tonne of reviews missing from here (mainly because of this ranking systemI've been doing) and a big part of that failing is Glenmorangie. How have I not review the basic 10yo Glenmo yet? Well, going onto my Glenmorangie folder on my laptop I found that I’ve mysteriously lost my Glenmo 10 review so here’s the other 2 I’ve got until I find some more.
I found the old Madeira finished one in my garage as one of my Dad’s dustys! Great find.
Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 46%
Colour: Ruby Red
Body: Medium
Nose: Clean, fresh and ethereal. Fresh fruit- Blackberry but quite tropical too with pineapple and mango. A little meaty. A tiny bit of spice- Cinnamon.
Water: More full nose. Juicy fruit- Mango, pineapple, blackberry but also some pear.
Taste: Very fresh and quite ethereal to start. A little vanilla then more full fresh fruit- Pineapple, mango and blackberry. Cinnamon into the finish.
Water: More creamy arrival and spicy and drying development. A little chalky.
Finish: Medium length. Blackberry and blueberry then dark chocolate.
12 years, 2 years finished in Port pipes. Very rich this and it did get better the more the level in the bottle went down.
73/100
Glenmorangie Madeira Finish (Old Style) 43%
Colour: Gold
Body: Medium
Nose: Slightly dusty (open bottle effect), fruit cake, raisin and toffee, opening up now, dry oak, ginger biscuit, some apple.
Taste: Soft, fruity, dry oak, ginger biscuit, dry spice, quite intense actually, raisin and then more oak and a little harsh spiciness.
Finish: Medium length. A harshness, some alcohol, ginger and oak.
A 1/3 full bottle found in my Dad's garage. Not as good as I was hoping and I definitely think the oxygen had gotten to this one a little bit.
70/100

Lp8 (Madeira Finish) Review [From Paris with Love]

Hi everyone,

Daves Whisky Reviews is 1 year old! Yay! It's the blog's anniversary today. Does that mean anything special? Not particularly. Business as usual: More reviews.

Do you remember that Cairdeas Laphhy from 2016 that was finished in Madeira casks? Well, if you were a fan of that (I haven’t tried it yet), you might be interested in this.
It’s a “Mystery malt” (huuuhhggggglaphhhuuuurooaighuuuuuhhg) Excuse me. A so called mystery malt from a very obvious Islay distillery. Distilled in 1998, it was then finished in Madeira casks.
Madeira is a funny fortified wine, in that to make it they essentially abuse the wine as much as possible, because they noticed that when the wine was stored on ships, it tasted better after a rough sea voyage round the world. Now, they heat it and slosh it about as much as they can in Madeira to try and replicate that.
Madeira isn’t hugely popular at the moment, but it’s seeing more use as whisky barrels recently as people become more experimental about finishings.

Lp8 53.5%
Colour: Dark Gold
Body: Full
Nose: Medicinal and fruity, blood orange, a little peppermint, opens up with lovely coastal sea air and seaweed.
Taste: Soft, orange then intense smoke and mineral and coastal waves, gritty stones, seaweed, some sweetness, spicy ginger.
Finish: Long length. Sweeter, fruitier and more coastal, orange and salt. Best bit.
This is a lovely style of Laphroaig (Whoops) The Madeira hasn’t overwhelmed the style at all, and there’s some great minerality and coastal flavours in here too.

Kilchoman Madeira, 10th Anniversary and 2008 MoM Single Cask

Well, hello again everyone!

Today we have a look at a small distillery I love to love. They really seem to be focussed on what matters (the whisky) and not on how much whisky they can fire into space.

On my trip I bought 2 bottles of Kilchoman: Kilchoman Madeira and the 10th Anniversary. I've also got a sample of Master of Malt's 2008 Single Cask, so we'll throw that in to compare. I like to compare. (Cough) For research purposes of course.

Let's do the Madeira first since it should be a little softer and less peaty.
This was fully matured in first fill Madeira Barrels from 2011 to 2015. Only 4 years old but it's taken on a wonderful colour. Release of 6100 bottles.

Kilchoman 2011 Madeira 50%
Colour: Mahogany
Body: Full
Nose: Rich and fruity. Dark and nutty with dark chocolate, coffee, cashew nut, hazelnut, juicy fruit- Blackberry, blueberry, blackcurrant, some citrus fruit- Lemon and lime slices, perfume, Turkish delight, mocha. A little of the sea, sweet powerful smoke in the background making it all a bit more complex, incense smoke. A little green leafiness developing, some putty.
Water: Much more fruity! Darker. More Madeira, more coffee, more chocolate, less smoke. Blackberry juice, blueberry, toffee, fudge, fig, strong English tea, stewed fruit, saffron spice. Then even more fruity again with Lemoncello, more blackberry and blueberry juice. Some brown sugar.
Taste: A light citrus and stewed fruit arrival, then gradual building big peat smoke with lots of ashy fruit, lots and lots of cola bottles, blueberry, blackberry, blackcurrant, some citrus in there too- Lemon mostly, kiln, soot, coals. A little putty and burnt plastic (not unpleasant) into the finish.
Water: Fruitier arrival, then much more dark fruitiness, almost Port-like with rich blueberries and blackberries, some nuttiness, Madeira covered chocolate, black coffee, some building ashiness with fresh ginger spice, then ash and soot into the finish.
Finish: Medium/Long length. Ashy then juicy citrus and dark fruit- Blackberries staying. After a bit the classic dry smoke creeps back.
Notes: Distilled 2011, bottled 2015. 4 years old, Madeira full maturation. Like peaty blackcurrant juice.
83/100

Delicious stuff! It's almost too sweet! And I love 'em sweet. It might be that the smoke isn't really balanced with the sweetness. There is smoke. There is sweetness. But they're almost separate from each other... Make sense? No? Let's keep going....
Onto the 10th Anniversary bottling. This was released as a limited run of 3000 bottles that you can only buy from the distillery. Released at Feis Ile this year to celebrate their 10th anniversary (duh). It contains various vintages from Bourbon barrels and Sherry casks. Includes barrels from 2005-2012, including some whisky from Cask No.1. Is it a millilitre? Is it a bottle's worth? Is this just a whisky to collect? Let's find out!

Kilchoman 10th Anniversary Edition 58.2%
Colour: Gold
Body: Full
Nose: Quite rich and complex. Sweet, spicy, fruity, smoky, mineral and green notes. Quite creamy, a little popcorn maltiness, vanilla pod, green oak, lemon and lime citrus, peach and apricot. More Sherried and fruitily sweet after a bit.
Water: Softer, darker and less green. Soft lemon, chocolate, oak coming out with liquorice, a little dry with peated grist. Tobacco and some Sherried fruit developing after a bit.
Taste: Sharp arrival, lovely lemon zest and peel, then stony lemon juice with peat smoke developing and mingling with it. I wouldn't it's say complex but it's integrated and powerful.
Water: Softer arrival, fruity at first then cold sea water. Oak developing with Sherry fruit, liquorice and some oakiness, a little tannic and much more drying, then powerful smoke really kicks up with the stony lemon juice coming back. More bitter and tannic after a bit.
Finish: Long length. A peaty puff, then lasting lemon citrus and mineral smoke. With water- More sherried and oaky with tannins, coffee and chocolate.
Notes: The Sherry is coming out more with each glass.
81/100
A great whisky, don't get me wrong, but not quite hitting all the right notes. Again, I think it could have been better.

And a last one, let's make it an indie. How 'bout this single cask from 2008 bottled by Master of Malt as part of their Single Cask range? It was matured in a 1st fill Bourbon barrel from 2008 to 2013. 5 years old. Should be pretty comparable to the 10th Anniversary but without the Sherry.

Kilchoman 2008 Master of Malt Single Cask 59.6%
Colour: White Wine
Body: Full
Nose: Much drier with less fruit than the 10th, more peat. Dense peat, medicinal edge- some TCP, a malty note- Popcorn, sweet vanilla, cooling note- cold sea water? and liquorice root. Quite dry.
Water: More dry, dry driftwood, dry white wine. More malty with more popcorn, a bit of biscuit, a little seaweed. More TCP too. A little fruitiness appearing after a bit.
Taste: Creamy, big malty sweetness then powerful peat creeping in and building and building- burning heather and tobacco, kiln, ginger and white pepper spice. Liquorice and cold sea water into the finish.
Water: Fruitier arrival going very dry. Bone dry white wine, white grape, a little vanilla. Some dry spice- dry ginger. Very dry with lots of oak into the finish.
Finish: Long length. Burnt tobacco and smouldering peat embers. With water- It's much drier, dry oak.
Notes: Very dry. Doesn't have the fruitiness of the others but it's more powerful.
80/100
Personally I prefer the Madeira, but they're all really good.

UPDATE: While finishing my bottle of Madeira, the rubbery notes started to come out too much and unbalanced the whisky quite a bit. On the other hand, the 10th Anniversary is still improving in the bottle and the green oak notes have subsided more.
Madeira updated score: 79/100
10th Anniversary updated score: 83/100
